Mount Sherman & Gemini Peak

I have been kind of slacking on my posting lately and for that I am sorry. I started using an on-line training journal so I no longer post my workouts here. There is a link on the right hand side of the page that will take you to my on-line log at www.attackpoint.org. This is an awesome site. I will also in the next few months be laying out my 2009 race schedule. I am excited about that.

Now to get down to why I am even posting anything. This past weekend Ashley, Kirk, Tracy, and decided to take on Mount Sherman at 14,036ft above sea level. This is a straight forward and pretty easy hike. While we were up there I decided that I might as well knock out Gemini Peak which is just a short ridge walk away. That will be one more top 100 in Colorado done. There are all kinds of neat mine structures all over the mountain that you can check out, see the pictures below. This is a great mountain for 1st timers that want to try their hand at climbing a 14er.

We had a great day with the exception of the wind and I could not have asked for better company. Below are some pictures from the hike.

Happy Trails.

Crestone Traverse (Peak to Needle) 9-7-08

I was going to type up a long drawn out route description and trip report but decided against it. The reason being that this is a dangerous traverse and I do not want to be responsible for leading anyone on the incorrect route. That happened to us and we got stuck in some hairy areas for about an hour by following someone else's trip report. Anyway the main key is to stay on the Cottonwood Lake side of the mountain until you are ready to head to the summit, do not cross over to the South Colony Lake side of the mountain. Also make sure you do your research! The route is not marked very well if at all in a lot of areas. Also it is better to go from Peak to Needle. I would not want to try and downclimb off the Needle without a rope, that is just asking for trouble.

Here is a very short breakdown of the climb:

Last Saturday Chris Deck, Kirk Tubbs, and I went down south and did the Crestone Traverse, one of the four classic 14er traverses in the state. We took off from Castle Rock at 4:30pm arriving at the upper 4X4 trailhead around 8pm. It takes about 1 hour to 4X4 up the 5-6 mile road from the main turn off. We slept at the trailhead Saturday night and climbed on Sunday.

The hike was about 13 miles round trip with about 6000-6500 feet of gain/loss. It took us about 11.5 hours and would have been quicker if we would not have gotten into some hairy spots during the traverse.

Here are the pictures from the climb so enjoy:

Snowmass Mountain-- Kirk's 14er finisher

Last Sunday a group of 7 of us went up to Snowmass Mountain to hike with my buddy Kirk on his 58th and last 14er. We choose the hardest route on the mountain called the S-Ridge. It was a great day even though I was still wiped out from Leadville 100the weekend before. I willed myself through the climb even though I really did not want to go. Looking back though I am happy that I went, it was well worth seeing my good friend finish and having the chance to do so with him. This was the 33rd different 14er that I have done, 25 left!

Here are some pictures from the climb (the wild flowers are nuts in this area):

Thanks for reading and HAPPY TRAILS!

Leadville 100 mile run-- Race Report

This past Saturday the whole year of training finally came to age, it was time to try and run my 1st 100 miler and I choose Leadville. Leadville is a classic course that you have to give respect to, if you don't it will chew you up and spit you out. With the average elevation at 11,000 feet above sea level it is one of the highest 100 milers in the country and below is my experience.

Race Website

Event Description:
50 miles out and back in the midst of the Colorado Rockies. Lowest point is 9,200 ft. and the highest point is Hope Pass, 12,600 ft. The majority is on forest trails with some mountain roads. Pacers allowed after the 50 mile point. 11 well-supplied aid stations with cut-offs; 5 are medical checks.

Here is the race Profile, you read the 1st 50 miles left to right then backwards for the second 50.

Weather:
The weather forecast for both Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th was a high of 55, low of 30 with a 60% chance of rain and snow up to 4-8 inches. It never did snow that much but there was lots rain and hail with some snow. It was an interesting day of weather.

Race Report:
The start of the race at 4:00 am was much better than I expected based on what NOAA was predicting for the weekend (see above). There was little rain and I was more awake than I thought I would be considering I only got about 2 hours of sleep. It was a good thing that I went up to Leadville on Wed night to get away from the everyday crap that goes on so I could rest as much as possible. The 2 previous nights I slept 12 and 10 hours each. I ran nice and slow from the start, taking my time getting to Mayqueen, mile 13.5 or so. I stopped to take a leak a few times which is good, means I am starting out with good hydration. I continued on around Turquoise Lake where I ended up behind a line of dozens of very slow folks which helped me start out at the slow pace that I wanted. I have a bad habit of taking off at the start line and burning myself out in longer races, for example you can go back in my blog and read about Red Hot 50K and Greenland 50K where I did this. There really was nothing eventful about this section. It was really neat to see about 500 headlamps going around the single track trail of the lake though. I made it into Mayqueen at 2:18, about 3 minutes slower than I intended. At Mayqueen I ate as much as I could, half a banana, half a peanut butter sandwich, a bottle of Cytomax, fig newton and some candy. During this section I had lots of water, candy, and a gel. I was trying to stay ahead of the calorie curve as much as I could. I spent a few mins in the tent refilling my Camelback and kept walking up the road while eating everything that Ashley was giving me.

I was going good leaving Mayqueen and looking forward to climbing up Sugarloaf, but as I climbed to the top of Sugarloaf there was a rain/snow/hail storm. Even with the storm I was able to keep a good clip up and down the hill which kept me some what warm considering how wet I was. I was wearing lots of clothing along with my Gortex jacket but that did not make a huge difference. I came into the Fish Hatchery some what cold about 2 hours later for a total running time of about 4:18 at this point. I changed my gloves because my hands were freezing and headed out on the road to treeline. The stretch from the Fish Hatchery to Halfmoon my least favorite part of the course, so I had to work to keep a decent pace here, usually I run/walked this section in training all summer, using the telephone poles on the road, I would walk one and run three, but today on the outbound I was able to run all the way to Treeline and run/walk the rest to Halfmoon. During this section I ate 1 gel, granola bar, some hard candy, and drank most of my water bladder. At the Fish Hatchery Ashley feed me half a peanut butter sandwich, 1 bottle of Cytomax, and an oatmeal pie cookie. On the road to Treeline I drank one more bottle of Cytomax.

I came into Treeline at 5:04 and Halfmoon at 5:34, still close to my goal pace.

From Halfmoon to Twin Lakes I was able to keep up a good run/walk cycle that got me into Twin Lakes at 7:35. During this section I was starting to have trouble with nausea so my food intake drop drastically. I drank lots of water during this section, almost the whole bladder, but only ate some hard candy. This was the start of mistake one. When I came into Twin Lakes I tried to get caught up on my calories. I ate some watermelon, 1/4 of peanut butter sandwich, cookie, and one bottle of Cytomax. Looking back it was not enough calories as you will see in the next section. Also in this section I took the wrong trail and by the time I realized it I was far down the hill. I cussed myself out because I did the same thing a month earlier in training and new better. This mistake cost me about 15 mins and 1-1.5 miles.

The run from Twin Lakes to the top of Hope is where things started falling apart. The climb up Hope was very muddy and it started to hail on me pretty hard, when it was not hailing it was raining. There was so much hail on the trail that it looked like it was under an inch of snow, the trail was whited out. I was having all kinds of problems with staying warm that by the time I hit Hopeless aid station at 9:26 the aid station worker pulled me and wrapped me in a blanket. I was shivering and was not responding to their questions very well. They wrapped me up and started pushing chicken broth and magic mash potato drink. They told me that I got this way because I did not have enough calories for my body to generate heat, not good. After about 20-30 mins I bounced back and left to run down to Winfield, the halfway point. On the way down I drank a bottle of Poweraid. I got into Winfield at 11:39 into the race, 30 mins behind my goal pace but still OK in my book considering what has happened so far. At Winfield I ate some more potato soup, bottle of Cytomax, and some noodles, this was all I could handle right now. After chowing down Nick (my pacer) and I took off up the road at a quick walking pace.

The climb back up Hope was hard and a good challenge. Nick drove me hard up the hill and we reached the Hopeless Aid at 13:51 into the race. When I reached Hopeless, I thought I was doing OK. I sat down on a log by the fire and ate some more potato soup. While I was sitting there Nick was in the tent getting himself some food another runner started puking right next to me, this causing me to loose everything that I had in my stomach. After a few minutes and some Poweraid Nick and left to get down to Twin Lakes. I had Nick get in front and just hold a quick power hike down the hill, I did not think that my stomach could hold up the the jarring action of running. Some where along this muddy trail another mistake was made and I can not pin point when it happened. As I was sliding around in the mud I twisted my left knee really good I think. It started hurting like hell and a couple of times it even just gave out on me as I was trying to walk down the hill. I was very thankful that I decided back in Winfield to use my hiking poles on this section. I think I will be using them all the way to the end. I tried to jog/run a couple of times across the field to the river crossing but my knee just would not let me, it would just give out and I would catch myself with my hiking poles. As we were coming into Twin Lakes I was starting to run out of energy. I have puked up everything that I had eaten since Winfield which meant that I had not had anything but Poweraid and Cytomax for calories since the 45 mile mark and this was mile 60. This was not good. I got into Twin Lakes at 15:32 into the race. At Twin Lakes I took the time and put on dry clothes and shoes since the night was coming. I was going to do everything I could to stay warm since my experience during the 1st time over Hope. I ate some more soup, other food that I can not remember, and drank some hot green tea to warm up the insides. After about 15 mins in the aid station my new pacer Tim and I took off for Treeline.

As Tim and I took off to climb out of Twin Lakes, little did I know that this next section was going to be a true test for me. The first mile up the hill went alright, but then I just stopped in the middle of the jeep road and puked up all the food I just ate at Twin Lakes, there went my precious calories into the dirt. Tim and I just kept walking, between my knee pain on any kind of up or down hill and my quickly disappearing energy this was all I could do. Finally a few hours later of me stumbling through the woods Tim got me to eat 2 crackers which stayed down. This was a good sign, now if my knee would just rebound. During this section I had to stop a lot to rest, I just had no energy at all. Tim kept asking me to eat and I kept turning him down. This was another mistake on my part, I should have made myself eat even if it was going to come up. This section was the longest section ever, we got into Halfmoon at 19:40, it took me 4 hours to go 9 or so miles, my race was falling apart. In Halfmoon the lady in charge of the cut offs (I can not remember her name) got me to eat a couple more crackers and 1/4 of a banana. She talked to me and told me just to keep trying to keep food down and to keep going. It was pretty safe from there to the Fish Hatchery to experiment to see if I could get my energy and knee back. With that advice Tim and I headed out of Halfmoon to meet the crew and the new pacer Patty at Treeline. From Halfmoon to Treeline is about 2.5 mile jog down the road, we walked it, I had no energy. During this short section I kept seeing some weird things. I saw some wild life that was not there and someone walking between Tim and I. That was very weird and the first time that that has happened to me. I also kept falling asleep while walking, when this happened I would stumble or trip which would wake me up and kill my damaged knee. Thank god for the hiking poles, they saved me so many times.

At treeline, I must have looked like death. When I got there my crew threw me in the truck to warm me up and try and get me to eat which I would not do. Finally Ashley started rubbing honey on my gums and with in minutes a little energy came back to me. With this new found small amount of energy my new pacer Patty and I headed out down the road to the Fish Hatchery. By this time my left knee was trashed. I already knew that there was no way that I was going to be able to make the climb over Sugarloaf with it. I was OK going on with low energy but not with my knee. During this short section to Sugarloaf I went back and forth in my head trying to figure out how to get myself up that mountain, there just was no way. I knee was giving out and I was falling over just walking down the road. By the time that I reached the Fish Hatchery at 22:40 into the race I threw in the towel with no regrets.

I know that I am not a great writer but I hope that you enjoyed sharing this little story with me. I would like to thank Ashley who has been putting up with me and my training for the past 7-8 months, she was also my main crew and was supposed to pace me from Mayqueen to the end, sorry we did not get that far. I want to also thank Dan for helping Ashley crew me all day and letting us use his truck. Thank you to all my pacers in order of what they did or were supposed to pace, Nick, Tim, Patty, Rebecca, and Ashley. It meant a lot to Ashley and I for you to come up to Leadville to try and help me complete this course. I am sorry to those pacers (Rebecca and Ashley) who did not get to run.

Even though we did not make it 100 miles as a team we were still successful! I am very happy and proud of this effort. At the same time I learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of. I also learned a great deal about the great people that I have surrounded myself with. Next time we will go even farther!

Log for the week of 6/9-6/15

Since completing my 1st 50 miler this week has had a focus of just staying active with anything and not sitting around the house. I did not run a lot of hard miles this week but I feel like I got in some good recovery along with some good hill work with the Barr Trail run that I did on Saturday. Here is a quick breakdown of the week.

Monday: OFF

Tuesday: Run 4 miles on the treadmill; Bike 15 mins with a fast easy spin

Wednesday: Bike 30 mins; Lifted weights for 45 mins

Thursday: Run 3 miles on the treadmill; Bike 30 mins with a fast easy spin

Friday: OFF

Saturday: Run 25.5 miles up Incline to Barr Trail then to top of Pikes Peak then came down the Barr Trail. Total ~8100 feet of gain/loss; Total time 7 hours

Sunday: OFF HAPPY BIRTHDAY ASHLEY!!!

Total miles for the week: 32.5 miles

Total time for the week: 10.5 hours

Not to bad as far as total hours for the week, trying to keep it above 10 hours per week even on my recovery weeks.

Here are some pictures from my Saturday long run:

This is a great training run with lots of hills. I am going to try and do this 2-3 more times before Leadville. If I can do this climb with no major problems then Hope Pass durning Leadville 100 should be cake (hopefully!).

This Saturday is the Mount Evans Ascent which is one of my favorite races. This year I am using this as training so my time is not going to be 2:30 like last year. I expect it to be closer to 3 hours. I am going to try and run down some of it also for some extra mileage after the race, may not be able to due to all the traffic that will be up there.

Anyway enough rambling on. Have a great week and get out there and run!

Squaw Peak 50 Preliminary Results‏

Got this e-mail from the race director and thought I would share all the results in case you have not seen them. It is not posted on the website for the race.

Hi Runners,

What an amazing race day. Congrats to all of you who were able to stick it out and also to those of you who gave it your best. I wish I had more control; over the weather. But if it had been just a normal day. Think of all the stories you would not have to tell about the "The Year of the MUD!"

Please check the results and if you feel there are any corrections please let me know. So that we can get it right before I post it on the internet.

More emails to follow soon with some email addresses for people you might want to thank.

Thanks everybody for your support ...

Squaw Peak 50 mile Ultra Marathon/Log 6/2-6/8

Last Saturday I went out to Orem Utah with Clyde to attempt the Squaw Peak 50 mile trail run which is rated the 3rd hardest 50 miler in the U.S. with almost 15,000 feet of climbing and descending. After this race I can not imagine what number 1 and 2 are like. Below is an account of my experience.

Race website

Course: Here is the description from the race website.
It is a very challenging, difficult and scenic loop course through the Wasatch Mountains above Provo, Utah. The trail will be marked. It consists of - dirt trails (43%), dirt roads (38%) and some paved (19%). In my opinion about 15% of the dirt trails was bush wacking in order to connect the different trails.

Weather:

The weather was forecasted on NOAA all week as 70-72 degrees with cloudy skies. Come race morning it was raining at the start with snow above 7000 feet. It must have dropped 3 inches or so in the 2-3 hours I was above 7000 feet in the first half of the race. The second half of the race it was sunny and right on what the forecast said it would be. We had it all as far as weather was concerned that day.

Report:

This was one of the most challenging things that I have done so far. Not only is it my 1st 50 miler but Squaw Peak 50 is rated the 3rd hardest in the US, great choice Shad and thanks Cylde for talking me into this. Anyway we arrived in Utah on Friday to attend the pre-race briefing on Friday night. At the briefing they had a good diner of pasta which we will be needing in the morning so I loaded up. After collecting our tee shirts and filling our bellies we headed back to catch some sleep.

The race started Saturday morning at 5 am just outside of Orem Utah. At the start there was a slight drizzle coming down that was not to bad. As I was dropping off the drop bags I over heard 2 ladies talking about how the rain was going to get worse before it got better even though the forecast did not call out for rain. Over hearing this I went back to Aid Station #8 drop back and grabbed my GoLite jacket that I placed in there for the climb over Windy Pass. Thank God I did, shortly after the start of the race the rain started coming down even stronger and the temps started dropping as we climbed.

My goal for this race was to try and finish in one piece. With that in mind I started in the back of the pack and just hung out there for a while as we made our way up the mountain in the first big climb. The trail was nothing but thick slimmy mud all the way up. This is the type of mud where it feels like you are walking on ice. I must have slipped and face planted 3-4 times up that 1st climb, I lost track how many times I fell coming down, it was endless. By the time we got down from that climb I was covered in mud front and back. Of course during dealing with all of this the rain decided that it wanted to turn into snow and dropped 3-4 inches on us over the course of a few hours on top. You can see the muddy/snowy trails in the pictures at the end of the report.

At the halfway point of the race the weather decided to clear up. I hit the 25-26 mile mark around 5 hours and 30 mins. The slowest marathon I have ever ran, but that is ok. The weather forced me to slow my pace and save something for the end. I was feeling pretty good. After stuffing my face at the aid station I had about 3.5hours to make it to the 33 mile cutoff, the only cutoff of the race at 9.5 hours. From here I just went into auto pilot and cruised to the aid station at mile 33 which I hit in 7.5 hours, 2 hours under the cutoff time and feeling good. I passed a lot of people durning this section due to starting slow and conserving energy. We also had about 4 stream crossings in this section, the trail even went straight up the middle of a creek for about 100-150 yards. There is no point in even trying to keep your feet dry on this run, especially with the weather we had that morning.

Now comes the hard part, Windy Pass....

As you can see in the course description above this next section from mile 33 to mile 41 has a +1160' climb, -430' drop, +1450' climb, -368' drop, all after running over 30 miles. The second climb of this section the +1450 happens all in 3/4 to 1 a mile trying to gain the top of the pass going up a slick snow/ice covered trail. Good times! This section, especially the second half of it, reminded me more of climbing a 14er here in Colorado and not a run. By the time that I hit the aid station at mile 41 on the other side of the pass my hands were so swelled up that they were painful, I was retaining lots of water and it was causing my joints to hurt like hell. I guess no more drinking for me for a while. I needed to sweat out all the water my body was holding on to. I have not had this happen to me before but have read about it in books.

From mile 41 to the finish was all downhill. About a elevation loss of 4,000 feet. The first 3 miles going down were covered with snow in sections that we had to traverse. Some sections were so steep that the race director had placed rope going across them so that we had something to hang onto. If you were to fall on this section you would slide a couple hundred feet down the hill, that would not be fun to up climb from. After clearing the snow the trail was very runable all the way to the end. The last 3.5 miles to the finish is on a road. Before hitting the road section and the last aid station at mile 46.5 I took a bad spill on the single track. I tripped over a rock and face planted right into the trail. Gave myself a charlie horse in my right leg, felt like I ripped my big toe nail off (see pictures), and split my lip. That fall had to had to been a site to see, were is a video camera when you need one?

It felt so good to cross that finish line and finally kill this 50 mile demon that I have been carrying around for the last 2 months. My final time was 12 hours and 6 minutes. That was good enough for 39th place out of 260 starters and 16th in my age group. Out of the 260 or so starters it looked like only about 200 finished, the weather really effected a lot of people. Even though this is rated the 3rd hardest 50 miler in the country they have had a finishing rate in the past of over 90% because there is no where to quit once you pass the 33 mile point. That was not the case today, it looks like a lot of people quit at or before mile 33.

I learned that I am a lot stronger than I give myself credit for that day, both mentally and physically. It was the confidence booster that I really needed to get myself really motivated for Leadville 100 mile trail run on Aug. 16th. Now it is time to recover from this over the next week and move on to more training for Leadville. Thanks for reading and below is my training log for last week also.

Log for the week of 5/26-6/1 (397 miles in May!)

This week on my written up training plan I only had about 35 miles of running called out. It was to be a recovery week, I try and build those in every 4-5 weeks in order to recharge the batteries a little. Anyway with Squaw Peak 50 coming up and getting some new shoes on Thursday that I want to try out I put in a little more than I planned for. Here is the breakdown of the week.

Monday: OFF, recovering from the marathon in Wyoming that I ran yesterday

Tuesday: Run 6.5 miles easy on the treadmill, Lift weights for 45 mins.

Wednesday: OFF, really tired and legs are feeling heavy, thought I needed another day

Thursday: Ran 10.5 miles on Mount Falcon for about 2500 feet of climbing.

Friday: Ran 8.25 miles up Apex to the top of Lookout Mountain for about 2000 feet of climbing

Saturday: AM: Ran 18.5 miles up the Mount Evans road from Echo Lake to Summit Lake.
PM: Ran 6 easy miles with Ashley at the Flying J Ranch

Sunday: OFF, hurt my left foot at the pool, not good. It is swollen and having problems wearing a shoe.... CRAP!

Total miles ran for the week: 49.75 miles
Total hours for the week: 10 hours

It was a good week with lots of hills and getting up to 13,000 feet but it ended with messing up my foot one week before another 50 mile race. Not good. Hopefully it will feel better by the end of the week and I can get a shoe on. It is Tuesday as I am writing this and I am still having problems with even keeping a shoe on. I think I will have to make adjustments and not run much this week to allow the foot to heal as much as possible. Thoughts?

Also just added up my mileage for the month of May. 397 miles this month, not bad but May is a 5 week month. This will need to increase next month to about 450-500 miles, we will see what happens.

Wyoming Marathon Race Report

This past holiday weekend Ashley, Braden, and I drove up to Laramie Wyoming to spend the Memorial Day weekend camping and running. The goal was to have a great little vacation and I was to run the Wyoming Marathon on Sunday.

We left Denver Saturday morning to drive up there and set up camp. We found a great location right around the turn around for the marathon, it was called Vedauwoo Rocks just off of I-80. Here is the link for more information on this area: http://www.vedauwoo.org/intro.htm I would recommend it for a short weekend get away. There are some cool things to see around here.

This was a great location to set up the 8 person tent and make a home camp. It was right next to a bunch of really cool rock formations and beaver ponds. With camp set up the next thing on my mind was eating a good dinner of salmon and veggies while getting ready for the marathon tomorrow.

After not finishing the 50 in Buena Vista 2 weeks ago I was going to try and do the 52.4 mile double marathon but decided that it was not a good idea with Squaw Peak 50 coming up in 2 weeks. It was better to run the marathon as my last training run for Squaw Peak. I kept telling myself all week leading up to the race, "It is a training run, it is a training run." Hopefully it will sink in. As I was getting ready I discovered that I had forgot my gels and race fuel at home. Tomorrow is indeed going to be an interesting day.

Before I get into my report to much here is a little bit about the race itself.

Course:

Hilly out and back on mostly dirt and gravel roads (100% for the Half and 77% for the Marathon) in Medicine Bow National Forest. Begins at 8,700 feet and drops to 8,000 feet at the turn around. Please see the course profile and map below.

You would read this profile left to right for the 1st 13.1 miles and then right to left for the second half of the race. It ends on a big climb which was a bitch.

Weather:

Was 30-50 degrees with constant wind of 20 mph and some stronger gust to deal with.

Report:

I had a really hard time getting out of bed on race morning to go. Ashley had to basically kick me out of bed and make me go. I was a complete ass to her, I kept say I don't want to get up, I am going to skip the race, ect.... She kept after me and I finally got my butt out of bed. Thanks Ash for making me get up!

We drove over to the start line about 10 miles away to get checked in and ready to go. We arrived there around 5:45am for the 6am start. It was a cold morning and I decided to wear running tights with long sleeve shirt and my GoLite jacket. I also had on gloves and a fleece stocking cap which I would take off later.

The first 6 miles were pretty much uneventful as I just went on auto pilot and ran along. I took off my jacket and gave to Ashley as I hit the paved part of the course.

This part of the course from about 6 miles to 10 miles is the worse part of the whole thing. We had to run about 4 miles down the frontage road to I-80. There is nothing out there to block the wind and was hilly, it was just brutal. At about the 10 mile mark we jump back to the other side of I-80 and head towards the turn around and our home camp. Up to this point, all that I have had is water and half a cookie that I got at an aid station. After turning around at 1:53 I stopped at home camp and made a bottle of Heed and got some candy and a fruit leather. From this point to the finish this and some more water is all I took in. Needless to say when I hit the last big uphill to the finish in the course profile above I did some walking for I ran out of energy and the legs were heavy.

On the way back to the finish I decided that I also needed to slow down and this was a training run. I went with a 10 min run/ 2 min walking plan so that I would slow down a bit and feel ok when I was done. Doing this I ended up passing about 4-5 people while still feeling good and relaxed. It was a great way to get through the brutal frontage road section on the way back.

Even with the run/walk plan and the walking that I did on the final 3 miles up to the finish I still finished in 4:09 for 8th place overall in the marathon. Not a bad training run if you ask me. Results: http://results.active.com/pages/page.jsp?eventID=1488061&pubID=3
After the race we drove the course and cheered on the 50 milers. We saw some amazing people do some amazing things. I think that both Ashley and I learned a lot this past weekend. Here is a race report from Jamie who got second overall in the 50 miler. It is a great read. http://altitudeultrarunner.blogspot.com/2008/05/rocky-mountain-double-race-report.html

Well if you ever get the chance to go up there for a race it was a great experience.

Log for the week of 5/19-5/25

I had the Wyoming Marathon on Sunday and it was a lot of fun. I will write a race report here shortly. Over all it was a good week but did not get into the weight room like I needed to. I will have to really work on that next week, I want to keep my strengh up for my upcoming 50 miler at Squaw Peak on June 7th. Here is a break down of the week.

Monday: Off (Bad head cold is in full effect)

Tuesday: Run 6.5 miles on the treadmill and ride the bike 15 mins at the gym

Wednesday: Run 9 miles at Green Mountain and ride the bike 30 mins at the gym

Thursday: Run 6.25 miles on the treadmill (head cold still there, wiping me out)

Friday: Run 9 easy miles on the treadmill

Saturday: OFF... Drove to Wyoming to set up camp

Sunday: Ran the Wyoming Marathon 26.2 miles in 4:09 for 8th place overall

Total miles ran for the week: 57

Total time for the week: 11.25 hours

Overall not a bad week, just a little bit more treadmill time than I would like but between me being sick and Ashley getting sick it was a rough week to get out there.

Have a great week.

Log for the week of 5/12-5/18

This week has been a challenge just to be active for some reason. I have been tired and run down all week. It just seems like I am not recovering like I was last year from my workouts. By the end of the week I had a raging head cold. Good times. Anyway here is the breakdown for the week.

Monday: Off.. Took the day off work also and just relaxed. Even went to the movies.

Tuesday: Run 6.25 miles on the treadmill @ easy pace; 45 mins lifting weights

Wednesday: Easy run at Green Mountain to the top and back (4.5 miles)

Thursday: Run 6.25 miles on the treadmill @ easy pace; 30 mins lifting weights

Friday: Run road around Green Mountain the home over the top of Green Mountain (9.5 miles) Sore throat starting

Saturday: Run around Green Mountain for 12-13 miles. Turning into head cold

Sunday: Hike Pikes Peak via Crags route (14.5 miles, 4400 feet of gain, 8.5 hours, suffered due to feeling like crap from the cold, it was a long day but willed myself through it.

Total miles ran this week: 38.50 miles

Total hours for the week: 16 hours (8.5 spent on Pikes hiking)

It was a productive week overall, it was nice to get my 1st 14er summit for 2008 out of the way. That will make me 1 out of 3 for the year, not a good start. I was pretty much uneventful hike but I did suffer due to the head cold I had. Pounding head ache and could not breath because I was stuffed up. Hope this goes away, I want to put in over 60 miles this coming week running. We will see. Here is the link to all the pictures from the hike on Pikes. I am not going to write up a trip report like I usually do because this is such a common mountain for a lot of people. One thing that I will say is that the road and the building on top sure is an eye sore on such a pretty mountain.

Have a great week.

Log for the week of 5/5-5/11

This past week I have been trying to keep around 6 hours of running total with some cross training thrown in. I don't think that I have been cross training enough. Anyway here is the breakdown for the week.

Monday: easy 15 min swim to loosen up

Tuesday: Run 3.25 miles on the treadmill followed by 45 mins lifting weights.

Wednesday: Run 8 miles on the road to Bear Creek and back

Thursday: Run 8.5 miles on the treadmill (2 easy,2@ 7:30pace, 2 easy, 1@ 7:30pace, finish easy) then spent 45 mins lifting weights.

Friday: Run 13.5 miles on the road to Morrison and back.

Saturday: Run 7.5 miles on big loop around Green Mountain with Ben

Sunday: Hike up road going to Guanella Pass from the Grant side with Ash and Braden. We hiked about 5.5 miles in 3 hours with about 1200 feet of gain.

Total miles ran this week: 40.75
Total hours for the week: 11.25

Overall not a bad week coming off a race. My hip that was giving me problems at the race is still hurting. It is like a dull constant ache in my right ass muscle. I have been working on it with the tennis ball and going to start lifting again more regularly. Hopefully that is all that it will take. I am thinking that it is either a slight pull that will go away if I just take an easy for a while or it is some muscle imbalance. If the latter then the weights and cross training should help with that.

I am still on the fence about the next upcoming race in WY. Not sure if I want to run the marathon or try my hand at the 50 miler. I am tempted to do the 50 because I really would like Ashley to be there for my 1st 50 and she is not going with me to Utah in June for Squaw Peak. We will see what happens between now and then, it all comes down to what training I can get in and how the hip feels. Here is the link for the race in WY if you are interested.

Collegiate Peaks 50 mile attempt.

Leading up to Race Day:

Since the end of Greenland 50K a few weeks ago I have been thinking and mauling over this race. It will be my first attempt at completing 50 miles in one shot. The most I have ran so far in my short running career of 3-4 years is the 34 mile race in Moab last Feb. So this not only going to be a physical challenge for me but mostly it will be a mental challenge. I have never faced such distances before.

The week leading up to the race I changed my training plan from running pretty much every day to just running 2 times this week at a very slow pace. You can see this in my Log on the last post. My thought process behind this was to try and give myself some sort of taper and go into the race as refreshed as I could. I think this came back to bite me in the butt. Looking back on my log I was reporting feelings of being sluggish and tired all week. I also was not sleeping or eating well due to the lack of running. I seem to control my diet better when I am running regularly. All week long I have been worried about how my belly was going to act during the week and got all kinds of advice, I was throwing up at my last race, and was putting all kinds of stress on myself. With not running in the evenings like I normally do it gave me so much time to sit and think about the upcoming race which in turn created more stress. By Friday everything felt blah and running on Saturday morning did not appeal to me like it normally would. Looking back at it now, it seems that I have sucked all the fun out of the week leading up to the race.

Race Day:

Link to the race site: http://www.collegiatepeakstrailrun.org/

As I woke up on Saturday morning at 5:15 am for the 6:30 am start I was thinking how I did not want to get out of bed. I slept fairly well considering the box hotel room bed that Ashley and I were sleeping on. Normally I would be jumping around with excitement on race morning but that was not the case today. After eating 2 pieces of bread with peanut butter and a banana we headed over to the race start a few blocks away. It was about 25 degrees out with clear skies and about a 5-10 mph wind in the open. I was wearing my GoLite running shorts, long sleeve shirt, and my GoLite jacket. Hopefully it will warm up quickly after the start because I was freezing cold.

At 6:30 am as the sun was finally starting to warm the earth up a little a large group of us runners headed out of Buena Vista east into the mountains. The first 3 miles or so was mostly on roads that were rolling mostly in an upwards direction. I started in the back and took my time. It seemed like my legs did not want to run this morning. My plan was just to take my time and get to the 25 mile turn around before the cutoff time of 5 hours, this means averaging 5 mph or quicker.

The first 10 miles is mostly all uphill with a gain of about 1300-1400 feet. These 10 miles were for the most part very uneventful for me as I just jogged along about a 6.5 mph average trying my hardest not to hammer the beginning like I always do. I made sure that I was drinking lots of water and a little bit of HEED along with eating a little something at every aid station. I wanted to make sure that I try and keep my energy levels up since it was going to be a long day out on the trails.

Here is a picture of the elevation profile. The first 25 miles you read it from left to right. The second lap or 25 miles you read it from right to left.

At about mile 10 the course takes a big downward direction with a few short climbs for the next four miles. I decided that on one of these down hills at about mile 12 that I was going to just let gravity take me and build me a little bit of a time buffer for the cutoff. As I was flying down the hill doing 10-12 mph I felt a pop in my right hip that stopped me dead in my tracks. I felt like someone was stabbing me in the hip with a big ass needle. I started walking and within a couple of minutes the pain turned into a pulsing ache that I could handle for now.

Mile 14 to 18 was the next big climb of about 1000-1100 feet. This climb was not too bad, I was able to keep a pretty good jog up the hill except every 15 minutes or so the stabbing pain would return in my hip and force me to walk for about a minute or two. Overall it was not bad, I was dreading the downhill and flats that remained from 18 to 25 the turn around point.

The pain that I had in my hip from mile 21 to 25 which is mostly rolling downhill was BAD. It was causing me to walk a lot more than I am used to. I think I may have pulled or strained something and the pain in my hip was getting worse and worse the closer I got to the finish line. The pain was also causing me to change my stride which was causing cramping in my whole right leg, what the hell?? It took all my will power to jog the final downhill to the turn around to where Ashley was waiting for me.

As I came in I was so upset and pissed off. I told the guy working the race that I was unsure about going on and may switch over to the 25 miler. He told me to let him know because they want to make sure that they account for everyone. Ashley made me lay down on the grass and she tried to stretch out my hip. It hurt so bad that I had tears running down my cheeks as she was stretching me. At that point I threw in the towel per say. It was done, I did not want to cause anymore damage than what I already did. I collected my finishers metal for the 25 miler and was told my time was 4 hours and 10 minutes. Not to bad considering that I was holding back to run another 25 miles. When I dropped from the 50 I was in about 6th or 7th place and was feel good with the exception of my hip. Oh well maybe next time I will get my first 50.

Quick Reflections of the Race:

Looking back now at last week and how I was feeling about everything has prompted some interesting thoughts.

1) I think I cut my running volume way to much for the week. I should have kept some of the volume and just cut out the intensity of the run.

2) Is it possible for my mental outlook to physically affect how a body part is feeling? I think so, I think that I was so worked up about this race all week that when something did not go my way it was magnified by 100 times. As I got closer to the turn around the worse the pain was.

3) I cut my salt intake on this run by over half compared to Greenland 50K. My stomach felt a lot better as compared to before.

4) I think after the soreness goes away in my right leg and I get back to training that the volume of running 60-70 miles a week is about right but I need to increase my total hours spent cross training. Get back to hitting the weight room and pool 2-3 times a week. I may have to start going before work to get this extra time in.

Thank you for reading and have a great week.

Log for the week of 4/28-5/4

This week I am attempting to taper for an attempt at my first 50 miler on Saturday. It was the worse week that I have had all year. I was so worried about my race that I was stress eating without even realizing what I was doing. By Monday 5/5 after the race I was up 3 lbs in one week!!! Below is my log for the week.

Monday: OFF, very tired and sluggish

Tuesday: Run 7 miles up and down Green Mountain 3 times. Fell on downhill and banged up right knee.

Wednesday: OFF, only 5 hours of sleep last night

Thursday: Run 5 miles on treadmill at very easy pace, right knee hurt a little

Friday: OFF

Saturday: Collegiate Peaks 25 miles in 4:10. Was supposed to do the 50 but quit and only did 25 due to pain in right hip and leg. Race Report to come soon.

Sunday: OFF, my right leg is sore!!!!

Total miles for the week: 37 miles

Total hours for the week: 6.5 hours

As I was looking back through my log for the week I have notes on almost everyday on how little sleep I was getting and how bad I ate every day. I let this 50 mile race get into my head. That is not like me, I was so stressed out about it that it was no longer fun. I think it is time to step back a little from my goals and reevaluate what I want them to be this year. I need to keep it fun or I will lose my mind.

On a side note I found out last night that someone died in the race on Saturday. Trying to find out more information.

Log for the week of 4/21 - 4/27

So the goal of this whole week was to try and recover from Greenland 50K while at the same time keep my mileage up somewhat since my 1st 50 miler is a little over a week away on May 3rd. Here is how my week broke down.

Monday: OFF my hamstrings were screaming at me all day, I think that bike ride yesterday may not have been the best idea after the 50K

Tuesday: Run 7.5 miles at Apex trail. I did both side to the trail so about 2500 feet or so of climbing I think.

Wednesday: Run 7.5 miles at Lair 'O Bear trail. This had about 1500-1800 feet of climbing.

Thursday: Run 6.25 miles at Mount Falcon. Up to top of Walkers Dream and back, about 1800 of climbing

Friday: Run 6.25 miles on the treadmill at an easy pace and spent 30 mins lifting weights on the upper body and core only.

Saturday: Run 20.25 miles on the treadmill. This was more a mental challenge than physical one. Did this because they were calling for rain in the morning and needed to be done very early for other things going on.

Sunday: Cherry Creek Sneak 5K (3.1 miles) with Ashley and Braden. This was Braden's (7 years old) 1st 5K. It was pretty neat to see.

Total miles for the week: 50.75
Total hours for the week: 9 hours

Not a bad week overall. I feel like I recovered very well from Greenland 50K and at the same time gots lots of good hill work in this week. Next week will be a half week of tapering for the 50 miler.

Have a great week!

Log for the week of 4/14 - 4/20 (week of Greenland 50K)

I already posted my race report for Greenland 50K and had some interesting thoughts and comments. Anyway I never posted my log for that week so here we go.

Monday: OFF

Tuesday: Run 8.25 miles up Apex to top of Lookout Mountain (1700-1800 feet of gain)

Wed: Run treadmill 6.5 miles with 4X800 at 6:30 pace. Lifted weights on total body for 1 hour.

Thursday: Run treadmill 6.25 miles with rolling incline.

Friday: OFF

Saturday: Greenland 50K (31 miles) in 5:06 and got a rub down after the race

Sunday: Bike (road) 18 miles for 1 hour 45 mins in Morrison.

Total miles ran this week: 52.25 miles

Overall it has been a good week. Did a lot of treadmill miles due to trying to do a soft surface taper and not risk rolling an ankle or something. Recovery this week has been very good, I will post this week's log on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Greenlands Trail 50K Ultramarathon April 19th 2008

Well another 50K has bit the dust....... Ran the Greenland Trail 50K south of Denver in 5:06 for 27th overall. A big improvement over my experence in Moab in Feb. Here is the link to all of the results.

I am having trouble with keeping things down after 25-26 miles and I am concerned because of my first 50 is coming up on May 3rd at Collegiate Peaks in Buena Vista. If this happens at this point in the 50 I don't know I can finish, there is a big difference between forcing myself through another 6 miles or another 25 miles while puking. Here is a breakdown of what happened. It was pretty warm in the upper 70s to lower 80s and very windy with gust around 30mph on Saturday also. The course is basically 4 laps with about 500-600 feet of climbing and downhill in each lap.

Started the race with 2 bottles of Heed in my waist pack. The goal was to get used to waist pack (just bought it) and try to drink one bottle or more per hour.

Lap 1: Time 1:02- I just settled into a pace that felt comfortable and just cruised along with the people around me. Took in 4oz water at 3.5 miles at aid station. Took gel at 40 mins. At end of 1st loop took in 4oz of Heed at aid station and both bottles of Heed were 1/2 gone. Took 2 salt tabs at 1 hour.
Total input for lap: Heed- 1 bottle and 4oz
Salt tabs- 2
1 gel
Water- 4oz

Lap 2: Time 1:04- Refilled one bottle that was gone at 1st aid station and took 4oz of water. At 1:30 took 2 Cliff Blocks. At the end of 2nd lap refilled the other bottle and took 2 salt tabs and 4oz of Heed.
Total input for lap: Heed- 1 bottle and 4oz
Salt tabs- 2
2 Cliff Blocks
Water- 4oz

Lap 3: Time 1:17- Same as Lap 2 but picked up some M&Ms at halfway point of the lap because I was hungry but there really was nothing to eat at the aid stations, all they had was candy. I was hoping for bannas or bagels. Walked some of the uphills after the aid station at halfway mark and ran all the downhill/flat.
Total input for lap: Heed- 1 bottle and 4oz
Salt tabs- 2
2 Cliff Blocks
Water- 4oz
Handful of M&Ms

Lap 4: Time 1:43- Started having stomach issues at mile 25, threw up halfway between start of lap and aid station. Forced some Heed into me while walk/jog to aid station. At the aid station I took 8oz of Coke, filled one bottle with water and walked most of the uphill while drinking the Coke. After going over the top I started running the downhill but stopped and puked again just on the other side of the highpoint of the course. This sounds gross but the Cliff blocks from the last lap were still in my stomach and came up. From this point on I walked/jogged sipping on water because my throat was raw from puking. Every time I started feeling sick while jogging I would stop to a walk. When walking I was watching my GPS watch to make sure I was staying around 4mph. The last 0.25 miles I ran in because my buddy Clyde was cheering for me to run it in and I did not want to finish on a walk and puked a 3rd time 30 seconds after crossing the finish line.
Total input for lap: Heed- 4oz and 1/4 bottle
Water- 1/4 bottle sipping
Coke- 8oz
Note-- All of this and some more came back up.

Total time: 5:06

My girlfriend who is a paramedic was concerned because I basically had no fluids for almost 2 hours and was more covered in salt than she as ever seen me so she pumped an IV bag into me, great to have easy access and not have to bug the race EMTs. A few mins later my stomach calmed down and I was drinking/sipping again.

I just can not seem to get this figured out. Was I not taking in enough electrolytes? To many electrolytes? Fluids? Food (I was hungry on lap 3 but aid stations had no real food)?

Was I running to fast for me? I felt great in the legs, lungs, head even after puking. I was able to keep going without any problems, it was all not being able to keep fluids down. Every time I started running, especially downhill I started getting sick to my stomach and would puke shortly after that.

If I would not have had the issues that I did on the 4th lap I would have had an awesome time, maybe around 4:30-4:45.

Anyway any ideas/advise from people out there would be great.

Here are some pictures that were taken at the race. Enjoy.
