At the end of year I post my list of books that I read at year and link them to Amazon so you can check them out if interested. Here is my list for 2011. The ones that I put the number in bold are worth the read, the rest were either for work or just plan crap.
If you have any suggestions of books to check out for 2012 I am all ears. I try to read at least 12 a year but if I ever want to knock down my growing list I am going to have to read more than 25. I just don't see that happening.
1. K2: Life & Death on the Worlds most dangerous mountain
2. The Extra Mile- Pam Reed
3. In Defense of Food
4. Coaching for Performance
5. Food Rules
6. Eiger Dreams
7. Paleo Diet for Athletes
8. Relentless Forward Progress
9. Running on empty

12. The Big Year
13. The Man Who Cycled the World
14. The Big Book of Endurance Training

Looking into 2012
Been kind of lazy with my posting lately but not really a lot to talk about. Just been training hard for the Red Hot 55K in Feb. With the Hardrock lottery last weekend and not getting in again of course really got me thinking about races for next year. My wife and I need to sit down and figure out what will work before everything sells out. Guess I better quit dragging my feet. Here is what I am looking at for 2012 from April on, now I just need to make some decisions.
April
28th- Collegiate Peaks 25 or 50 was thinking the 25 then Greenland a week later but maybe the 50 would be best.
May
5th- Greenland 50K
6th- Fort Collins Marathon (still want to get that Boston qual time)
12th- Quad Rock 50miler
19th- Buena Vista Adventure Race
June
2nd- Dirty Thirty 50K
16th- Mount Evans (one of my favorite races, 2 close to Black Hills to do?)
17th- Estes Park Marathon (only consider if doing Leadville)
23rd- Lake City 50 (only consider if doing Leadville)
22-24th- Black Hills 100
30th- Leadville Marathon (only consider if doing Leadville)
July
8th- Pace at Hardrock again- 50 miles (not sure if I can do this if I do Blackhills 100)
15th- Leadville 50 (only consider if doing Leadville)
14th- Devils Backbone 50 (only consider if doing Leadville)
14th- Summit County Adventure race
Aug
18-19th- Leadville 100
18-19th- Pike Peak ascent and marathon double (if I do Blackhills)
One race that I am eyeing due to being by my dad’s in MT is
Oct
Le Grizz 50
Thoughts? Or other races I might be missing that are not far away? I use the shorter races as practice training runs for the 100.

2009 Collegiate Peaks 5/2/09
I was not going to write up a report on this race but due to JT being a pain in the ass about it here it is.
Leading up to Race Day:
The week leading up to the race I was under a lot of stress causing me to loss all kinds of sleep. I think the longest that I slept that whole week was 4 hours a time. I also was not eating well due to the stress. I seem to control my diet better when I am running regularly and everything is in line. I was sure that Friday before the race I was going to get laid off from work. I even went as far as to clean out my cube so that when it happened I could just walk out. Looking back at it now, it seems that I have sucked all the fun out of the week leading up to the race. It should have been a stress reliever but instead it was a stress creator. I was just mentally fried.

As I woke up on Saturday morning at 5:15 am for the 6:30 am start I walked down to the breakfast bar at the hotel to toast the bagel that I brought with me. I ate that with peanut butter and honey that I brought from home. I was not going to depend on the hotel breakfast bar for food like I did in Moab.
At 6:30 am as the sun was finally starting to warm the earth up a little a large group of us runners headed out of Buena Vista east into the mountains. The first 3 miles or so was mostly on roads that were rolling mostly in an upwards direction. I started in the back and took my time. It seemed like my legs did not want to run this morning. My plan was just to take my time and get to the 25 mile turn around without any time in mind.
The first 10 miles is mostly all uphill with a gain of about 1300-1400 feet. These 10 miles were for the most part very uneventful for me as I just jogged along about a 6.5 mph average trying my hardest not to hammer the beginning like I always do. I made sure that I was drinking lots of water and a little bit of HEED along with eating a little something at every aid station. I wanted to make sure that I try and keep my energy levels up since it was going to be a long day out on the trails.
Here is a picture of the elevation profile. The first 25 miles you read it from left to right. The second lap or 25 miles you read it from right to left.

At about mile 10 the course takes a big downward direction with a few short climbs for the next four miles. I decided that on these down hills at about mile 12 that I was going to just let gravity take me and build me a little bit of a time buffer for the cutoff. Basically I just ran at a comfortable pace but I was bored and had no real desire to even be out there after the week I had. Basically I just did not care.
Mile 14 to 18 was the next big climb of about 1000-1100 feet. This climb was not too bad, I was able to keep a pretty good jog up the hill except few mins my legs would tire a bit and I would walk for about a minute or two so they could recover. All I could think about during this time was how much I would rather be at home with my girl. You see not only was I worried about being laid off earlier in the week but we just moved into a house and my girl just took a new job with Manitou Fire as thier new paramedic. Just so much going on! All in one week!
From mile 21 to 25 which is mostly rolling downhill I had already decided to drop. So I cranked up the pace a little on the flats in order to get done a little sooner. When I hit the final big downhill into town I was forced to slow down due to the line of people all heading down the single track.
As I was coming up on the turn around I caught JT and told him what was going on. Of course JT being JT called me a puss and tried to get me to head back out with him. When I came in I was mentally done, I was just having an off day and did not want to be there. I told the guy working the race that I was switching over to the 25 miler. I collected my finishers metal for the 25 miler and was told my time was 4 hours and 12 minutes. 2 minutes slower than last year. Not to bad considering that I was holding back to run another 25 miles. When I dropped from the 50 I was in about 16th or 17th place (yes I was counting as I was coming in) and was feeing good energy wise but not so much mentally. I just wanted to go home and spend time with my family, so that is what we did. We went back home to Littleton and caught an afternoon movie and went out for a nice dinner. Oh well maybe some day I will get this 50 miler completed.
Quick Reflections of the Race:
Looking back now at earlier in the month and how I was feeling about everything has prompted some interesting thoughts.
1) Stress from work and life changes are huge in how they affect everything.
2) Sometimes it is better to just take a step back to see the whole picture
3) My stomach felt a lot better as compared to past races, getting better with my calorie intake
Thank you for reading and have a great upcoming holiday week.

Squaw Peak 50 Preliminary Results
Got this e-mail from the race director and thought I would share all the results in case you have not seen them. It is not posted on the website for the race.
Hi Runners,
What an amazing race day. Congrats to all of you who were able to stick it out and also to those of you who gave it your best. I wish I had more control; over the weather. But if it had been just a normal day. Think of all the stories you would not have to tell about the "The Year of the MUD!"
Please check the results and if you feel there are any corrections please let me know. So that we can get it right before I post it on the internet.
More emails to follow soon with some email addresses for people you might want to thank.
Thanks everybody for your support ...

Hi Runners,
What an amazing race day.

Squaw Peak 50 mile Ultra Marathon/Log 6/2-6/8
Last Saturday I went out to Orem Utah with Clyde to attempt the Squaw Peak 50 mile trail run which is rated the 3rd hardest 50 miler in the U.S. with almost 15,000 feet of climbing and descending. After this race I can not imagine what number 1 and 2 are like. Below is an account of my experience.
Race website
Course: Here is the description from the race website.
It is a very challenging, difficult and scenic loop course through the Wasatch Mountains above Provo, Utah. The trail will be marked. It consists of - dirt trails (43%), dirt roads (38%) and some paved (19%). In my opinion about 15% of the dirt trails was bush wacking in order to connect the different trails.

Weather:
The weather was forecasted on NOAA all week as 70-72 degrees with cloudy skies. Come race morning it was raining at the start with snow above 7000 feet. It must have dropped 3 inches or so in the 2-3 hours I was above 7000 feet in the first half of the race. The second half of the race it was sunny and right on what the forecast said it would be. We had it all as far as weather was concerned that day.
Report:
This was one of the most challenging things that I have done so far. Not only is it my 1st 50 miler but Squaw Peak 50 is rated the 3rd hardest in the US, great choice Shad and thanks Cylde for talking me into this. Anyway we arrived in Utah on Friday to attend the pre-race briefing on Friday night. At the briefing they had a good diner of pasta which we will be needing in the morning so I loaded up. After collecting our tee shirts and filling our bellies we headed back to catch some sleep.
The race started Saturday morning at 5 am just outside of Orem Utah. At the start there was a slight drizzle coming down that was not to bad. As I was dropping off the drop bags I over heard 2 ladies talking about how the rain was going to get worse before it got better even though the forecast did not call out for rain. Over hearing this I went back to Aid Station #8 drop back and grabbed my GoLite jacket that I placed in there for the climb over Windy Pass. Thank God I did, shortly after the start of the race the rain started coming down even stronger and the temps started dropping as we climbed.
My goal for this race was to try and finish in one piece. With that in mind I started in the back of the pack and just hung out there for a while as we made our way up the mountain in the first big climb. The trail was nothing but thick slimmy mud all the way up. This is the type of mud where it feels like you are walking on ice. I must have slipped and face planted 3-4 times up that 1st climb, I lost track how many times I fell coming down, it was endless. By the time we got down from that climb I was covered in mud front and back. Of course during dealing with all of this the rain decided that it wanted to turn into snow and dropped 3-4 inches on us over the course of a few hours on top. You can see the muddy/snowy trails in the pictures at the end of the report.
At the halfway point of the race the weather decided to clear up. I hit the 25-26 mile mark around 5 hours and 30 mins. The slowest marathon I have ever ran, but that is ok. The weather forced me to slow my pace and save something for the end. I was feeling pretty good. After stuffing my face at the aid station I had about 3.5hours to make it to the 33 mile cutoff, the only cutoff of the race at 9.5 hours. From here I just went into auto pilot and cruised to the aid station at mile 33 which I hit in 7.5 hours, 2 hours under the cutoff time and feeling good. I passed a lot of people durning this section due to starting slow and conserving energy. We also had about 4 stream crossings in this section, the trail even went straight up the middle of a creek for about 100-150 yards. There is no point in even trying to keep your feet dry on this run, especially with the weather we had that morning.
Now comes the hard part, Windy Pass....
As you can see in the course description above this next section from mile 33 to mile 41 has a +1160' climb, -430' drop, +1450' climb, -368' drop, all after running over 30 miles. The second climb of this section the +1450 happens all in 3/4 to 1 a mile trying to gain the top of the pass going up a slick snow/ice covered trail. Good times! This section, especially the second half of it, reminded me more of climbing a 14er here in Colorado and not a run. By the time that I hit the aid station at mile 41 on the other side of the pass my hands were so swelled up that they were painful, I was retaining lots of water and it was causing my joints to hurt like hell. I guess no more drinking for me for a while. I needed to sweat out all the water my body was holding on to. I have not had this happen to me before but have read about it in books.
From mile 41 to the finish was all downhill. About a elevation loss of 4,000 feet. The first 3 miles going down were covered with snow in sections that we had to traverse. Some sections were so steep that the race director had placed rope going across them so that we had something to hang onto. If you were to fall on this section you would slide a couple hundred feet down the hill, that would not be fun to up climb from. After clearing the snow the trail was very runable all the way to the end. The last 3.5 miles to the finish is on a road. Before hitting the road section and the last aid station at mile 46.5 I took a bad spill on the single track. I tripped over a rock and face planted right into the trail. Gave myself a charlie horse in my right leg, felt like I ripped my big toe nail off (see pictures), and split my lip. That fall had to had to been a site to see, were is a video camera when you need one?
It felt so good to cross that finish line and finally kill this 50 mile demon that I have been carrying around for the last 2 months. My final time was 12 hours and 6 minutes. That was good enough for 39th place out of 260 starters and 16th in my age group. Out of the 260 or so starters it looked like only about 200 finished, the weather really effected a lot of people. Even though this is rated the 3rd hardest 50 miler in the country they have had a finishing rate in the past of over 90% because there is no where to quit once you pass the 33 mile point. That was not the case today, it looks like a lot of people quit at or before mile 33.
I learned that I am a lot stronger than I give myself credit for that day, both mentally and physically. It was the confidence booster that I really needed to get myself really motivated for Leadville 100 mile trail run on Aug. 16th. Now it is time to recover from this over the next week and move on to more training for Leadville. Thanks for reading and below is my training log for last week also.

Collegiate Peaks 50 mile attempt.
Leading up to Race Day:
Since the end of Greenland 50K a few weeks ago I have been thinking and mauling over this race. It will be my first attempt at completing 50 miles in one shot. The most I have ran so far in my short running career of 3-4 years is the 34 mile race in Moab last Feb. So this not only going to be a physical challenge for me but mostly it will be a mental challenge. I have never faced such distances before.
The week leading up to the race I changed my training plan from running pretty much every day to just running 2 times this week at a very slow pace. You can see this in my Log on the last post. My thought process behind this was to try and give myself some sort of taper and go into the race as refreshed as I could. I think this came back to bite me in the butt. Looking back on my log I was reporting feelings of being sluggish and tired all week. I also was not sleeping or eating well due to the lack of running. I seem to control my diet better when I am running regularly. All week long I have been worried about how my belly was going to act during the week and got all kinds of advice, I was throwing up at my last race, and was putting all kinds of stress on myself. With not running in the evenings like I normally do it gave me so much time to sit and think about the upcoming race which in turn created more stress. By Friday everything felt blah and running on Saturday morning did not appeal to me like it normally would. Looking back at it now, it seems that I have sucked all the fun out of the week leading up to the race.
Race Day:
Link to the race site: http://www.collegiatepeakstrailrun.org/
As I woke up on Saturday morning at 5:15 am for the 6:30 am start I was thinking how I did not want to get out of bed. I slept fairly well considering the box hotel room bed that Ashley and I were sleeping on. Normally I would be jumping around with excitement on race morning but that was not the case today. After eating 2 pieces of bread with peanut butter and a banana we headed over to the race start a few blocks away. It was about 25 degrees out with clear skies and about a 5-10 mph wind in the open. I was wearing my GoLite running shorts, long sleeve shirt, and my GoLite jacket. Hopefully it will warm up quickly after the start because I was freezing cold.
My plan was just to take my time and get to the 25 mile turn around before the cutoff time of 5 hours, this means averaging 5 mph or quicker.

I decided that on one of these down hills at about mile 12 that I was going to just let gravity take me and build me a little bit of a time buffer for the cutoff. As I was flying down the hill doing 10-12 mph I felt a pop in my right hip that stopped me dead in my tracks. I felt like someone was stabbing me in the hip with a big ass needle. I started walking and within a couple of minutes the pain turned into a pulsing ache that I could handle for now.
Mile 14 to 18 was the next big climb of about 1000-1100 feet. This climb was not too bad, I was able to keep a pretty good jog up the hill except every 15 minutes or so the stabbing pain would return in my hip and force me to walk for about a minute or two. Overall it was not bad, I was dreading the downhill and flats that remained from 18 to 25 the turn around point.
The pain that I had in my hip from mile 21 to 25 which is mostly rolling downhill was BAD. It was causing me to walk a lot more than I am used to. I think I may have pulled or strained something and the pain in my hip was getting worse and worse the closer I got to the finish line. The pain was also causing me to change my stride which was causing cramping in my whole right leg, what the hell?? It took all my will power to jog the final downhill to the turn around to where Ashley was waiting for me.
As I came in I was so upset and pissed off. I told the guy working the race that I was unsure about going on and may switch over to the 25 miler. He told me to let him know because they want to make sure that they account for everyone. Ashley made me lay down on the grass and she tried to stretch out my hip. It hurt so bad that I had tears running down my cheeks as she was stretching me. At that point I threw in the towel per say. It was done, I did not want to cause anymore damage than what I already did. I collected my finishers metal for the 25 miler and was told my time was 4 hours and 10 minutes. Not to bad considering that I was holding back to run another 25 miles. When I dropped from the 50 I was in about 6th or 7th place and was feel good with the exception of my hip. Oh well maybe next time I will get my first 50.
Quick Reflections of the Race:
Looking back now at last week and how I was feeling about everything has prompted some interesting thoughts.
1) I think I cut my running volume way to much for the week. I should have kept some of the volume and just cut out the intensity of the run.
2) Is it possible for my mental outlook to physically affect how a body part is feeling? I think so, I think that I was so worked up about this race all week that when something did not go my way it was magnified by 100 times. As I got closer to the turn around the worse the pain was.
3) I cut my salt intake on this run by over half compared to Greenland 50K. My stomach felt a lot better as compared to before.
4) I think after the soreness goes away in my right leg and I get back to training that the volume of running 60-70 miles a week is about right but I need to increase my total hours spent cross training. Get back to hitting the weight room and pool 2-3 times a week. I may have to start going before work to get this extra time in.
Thank you for reading and have a great week.
