Dr. Phil Maffetone Interview on TRN podcast

Time to get back to base training.  How do you define what base training is?  Well I am a believer in Maffetone training as you can see from my post here.  Here is a great new podcast on Trailrunning Nation with an interview of Dr. Maffetone.  Have a listen!

Lance

Yes I was a big fan of Lance at one time as much as it pains me to say.  Well after all the Lance drama that has been going on over the last few weeks this video below sums up how I feel about him now.

My first Strava Badge

I bet your jealous.  Got my first Strava badge with the iRunFar Holiday challenge.  Ended with 71 miles in the 6 days with even taking the last day off from running.  Next up, the 30 day Paleo challenge at the gym and Strava's Base Miles Blast January Challenge.

Here is the details of what the challenge was:  "Need some motivation to get out the door during the holidays? From December 24th through January 1st, iRunFar is challenging you to run 50 miles. Yep, just 50 miles in 9 days. And you can always go for more...

All you have to do is run with your Garmin, iPhone or Android, log your miles on Strava and watch the miles add up!

MANUAL ENTRIES DO NOT COUNT

We know it's cold, we know it's dark and we know you're busy. That's why we challenge you to put down that cookie and get out the door."

2012 Year End Numbers

Not really going to write up a big year in review post this year.  You can get the drift of how I feel about my year when you read the post right after my Leadville failure in Aug.  I am going to share my numbers for the year though.

Went with doing more tempo style workouts this year to get ready for Leadville instead of high vertical like years past.  I am disappointed with myself that I did not even get over 300,000 feet of gain this year but happy with some of the speed I gained.  Last year I was just under 400,000 without even doing any big races.  If I am going to help my runner (whom to be shared later) break 34 hours at Hardrock 100 this year I am going to have to start focusing on a lot more vertical.  I think I will need to be over 200,000 feet by mid July.

As far as my plans for 2013, stay tuned.   That is still being worked out.  Hope everyone had a great holiday season and it is time to get back to doing some serious work again.

2012 Books Read

Its that time again!  At the end of year I post my list of books that I read at year and link them to Amazon so you can check them out if interested. Here is my list for 2012. I put a * behind the ones that are worth reading.  I have a couple more books that are in process right now and if I finish those before the end of the year I will just add them onto next years list.

If you have any suggestions of books to check out for 2012 I am all ears. I try to read at least 12 a year but if I ever want to knock down my growing list I am going to have to read more than 25.  The only reason this list is so long is because there is a bunch of Kindle Singles on here and short books on investing.   Hope you find something that you will enjoy!  Happy Holidays!

2012 Books Read

2.  The Long Run- Mishka
9.  Iron War*
12.  The Duel*
16.  The Ledge*
18.  Foundation
28.  Unbroken *

Longs Peak 9-8-12

A couple of weeks ago I was able to get out for a day with Rob and Bob to play around on Longs for a while.  This is one of my favorite hike/climbs within an hour or so of my house.  It has a little bit of everything.   Here are some photos from our run/hike.  I think these are some of the best photos that have been taken on one of my many climbs of this awesome mountain.

New sign?? I don't recall ever seeing this before this year.

F'ed it up- Quick Leadville Report

I have been sitting here pondering what to write and say for the past couple of weeks since trying my hand at Leadville again and I have nothing.  I just plain ass FUCKED it up in the days leading up to the race and don't feel like typing out all the details.  Without going into the details I basically let a situation that I don't want to share right now effect the sleep I was getting in the 2 days leading up to the race.  By the time race morning rolled around I had only 8ish hours of sleep in the 48 hours leading up to the race.  I was able to keep pace through mile 60 but by the time it started getting dark outside I was falling asleep standing/walking.  I just could not keep my eyes open!  Nothing worked and I ended up being timed out at Mayqueen mile 87.  This really sucked, I was in the best shape I have ever been and blew my shot.   I want to thank my wife of course for her awesome support along with Fred Ecks, Eric Lee, and Neal Palles for their help in crewing and pacing.

Right now as I write this I am not sure if I will be doing much racing anymore.   Just getting kind of tired of training plans, ect.  I still am going to run a lot just may not race much.  I keep having thoughts of finishing the 14ers and starting to get ready for my dream mountain climb which I am not ready to share about yet.  That just may become my focus over the next 1-2 years which will be great, it is where I was before I got into ultras and would love to get back to that spot.

Here are some photos from the race.  Enjoy.

Getting right in the head for Leadville.

Since Leadville is getting closer and closer by the minute I have been thinking more and more about the fun and suffering that is going to take place for me this weekend.  It has been 2 years since I have ran further than 40 miles so it feels like it is my 1st 100 miler all over again, which scares me a bit.  Anyway needless to say I know that I have better training than in years past but I am still struggling mentally with the upcoming jog right now.  Hopefully that works itself out over the next few days.

I got this sent to me by a friend of mine Chris Gerber last year and thought it would be fitting to share for the upcoming adventure.  I have been saving it for a while now.  Enjoy.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This seems rather fitting for ultrarunning...when you're out there playing the games you can't win, the games against you.

"Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!

There are points to be scored.  there are games to be won.

And the magical things you can do with that ball

will make you the winning-est winner of all.

Fame!  You'll be famous as famous can be,

with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don't.

Because, sometimes, they won't.

I'm afraid that some times

you'll play lonely games too.

Games you can't win

'cause you'll play against you.

All Alone!

Whether you like it or not,

Alone will be something

you'll be quite a lot.

And when you're alone, there's a very good chance

you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.

There are some, down the road between hither and yon,

that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.

But on you will go

though the weather be foul

On you will go

though your enemies prowl

On you will go

though the Hakken-Kraks howl

Onward up many

a frightening creek,

though your arms may get sore

and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike

and I know you'll hike far

and face up to your problems

whatever they are."
