Monday Funday- Capitol Peak

Yes, I spelled it correctly in the name of the post.  Look it up if you don't believe me.

Skipped out of work yesterday with a co-worker Scott and hit up a 14er that both of us have not done before.  I think this one is my new favorite even though route finding can be a little challenging at times.   Ended up with 18 miles and 6100ft of vertical gain.  Number 47 out of 58 and the Elk Range 14ers are now done.

  1. Nice! Looks fun. That ridge used to freak me out, but any more it just looks interesting and I look forward to climbing it some day. It's more the Crumbling Bells that put me off now : )

    1. It is a pretty awesome mountain. Can be challenging as far as finding the right route the last part on K2 and after the knife edge so study up.

  2. Nice work! Capitol was my finisher peak. Took me two attempts (weathered off both times at/after K2), then got it on the 3rd try. I found K2 to be somewhat tricky and dangerous in spots, but not too bad (though one of my partners almost rode a huge boulder down to Capitol Lake). The knife edge is visually dramatic, but over hyped in my opinion, was actually really fun in nice weather and taking our time. Beyond the knife was where it got interesting, some route finding and some no fall zones, but the rock was generally solid, aside from those that were not. I guess we littered on the summit too, a friend popped a bottle of champagne, so hope it was not too boozy up there (though that was 10 years ago). Probably not the first time, or the last. I'm sure I'll back up there someday, it is one of my wife's last 5 remaining unique 14ers. Congrats again!

    1. K2 was more challenging for sure than the knife edge. Took a bit to find our way over it towards Capitol, coming back it was not so bad. Fun day for sure!
