“Forgiveness is the final form of love.” - Reinhold Niebuhr

This quote hit me this week when I came across it and got me reflecting some...  Still in the process of forgiving myself for some bad choices that I made the past few years and I am getting better at it every day at forgiving myself.  I tend to be very hard on myself.   I credit Paula for a lot of this.....

---  Starting a nutrition challenge tomorrow that runs for 35 days.  Basically just clean eating (whole foods only), no alcohol, min of 45mins a day of exercise, read at least 10 pages, and stretching every night.  Since I am only allowing myself one drink a month and there is no alcohol allowed in the challenge which will be over the rest of the month, I talked Paula into meeting our friends Rey and ZB for a drink last night before the challenge starts.  January's drink has been consumed and yes it was an Old Fashion.

10 am:  5.2 miles averaging 8 min pace.  Easy miles around the Tech Center right after the gym.. Took a few miles for the legs to come around after that rowing.

-- Started the clean eating today so threw out the junk food from the pantry and fridge....  I would have donated it but it was all open and half eaten.  LOL

--  Last week when I was up in Fairplay at Don's house he gave me this beast since he is getting a bigger one.... been using it every other day.  Tonight Paula came over and we spent 40mins sweating it out.  Thanks Don!!!

Sunday:

10:30 am:  Bike 15.3 miles in 1:25.  Gravel ride with Paula from Full Cycles in Boulder out around the Boulder Rez and back.  Group training ride for Old Man Winter in 4 weeks.  Super chill and lots of breaks as the group would come back together.

Total Weekly Numbers

Not the best week but not the worse either.  Missed running yesterday but okay with it.  Started the nutrition challenge on Saturday so much less calories than normal due to cutting out all processed food so been a little low energy as things adapt to the diet changes.  That is going to take about a week or so and yes the so called keto flu is real.

Quick Year in Review... 2022

“I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the years'.” - Henry Moore

Really love this quote.  Guess it is time to put together some sort of year in review just for my record to look back on in the years to come.  So here we go again.

Not a lot to say about this year... been a pretty damn good year overall in most fronts.  Covid and my back injury really dragged down my overall numbers but honestly who really cares?  It is called getting older and just life in general.  Ready to throw down in 2023....

Training: Okay year training wise, could have been so much better though..  There will be much more skiing and biking in 2023 with being signed up for the Grand Traverse Triple Crown  again since I did not finish it due to Covid and my back injury.  Also in Hardrock again so that is the focus for the summer.  Super excited for my adventures in 2023.    Here is how 2022 breaks down.

How does that compare to the past years?  Well this is an interesting view of the last 15 years.  Decrease over last year due mostly to lost time due to Covid and taking almost 7 weeks off due to the back injury in the fall.  Hopefully will be back over 800 hours in 2023.

Races:
A somewhat more normal year for me as far as races are concerned.  Not quite the 30 plus events that I normally partake.  Did really struggle in the spring with my mental outlook on my life (aka depression) and did not start a bunch of races from that and also from Covid... I had it this spring which messed me the hell up for a while.  Also the back injury on Sept 1st the knocked me out until about Nov as well.  Lots of down time this year.

2022 Races/Events

Books:
Got in a solid 30 books this year which was the goal.  Little bit of a struggle this year getting in all 30, got the last one with a week or so to spare.  All over the place on my books with no real theme which is normal for me. I just read whatever catches my eye.  Lowering the bar some this year with a goal of 24 or 2 per month.  Best book of the year???  River of Doubt*  Read it!!!

Review of Goals for 2022:

Another hit or miss year on my loose top 10 goals that I laid out last year....  Got number 1 done which was more important to me than all the others.

  1. Give Hardrock hell and have a blast doing it. - Solid race!!  Very pleased on the result
  2. Average a Peak a week in 2022 - Done, did 75 plus summits this year.
  3. Travel somewhere new for a race - Done, Paced Western States and Crewel Jewel...
  4. Run Coaching Certification- Missed
  5. Read at least 30 books - Done...
  6. Sky Dive- waiting on you Avery, need to finish this.  Tired of seeing it every year.  LOL
  7. Leave the lower 48- Is it possible due to Covid? - Missed
  8. Travel somewhere I have never been if I don't leave the lower 48 - Done
  9. Keep the blog more updated - Done
  10. Backpacking on the Colorado Trail for 3-7 days - Missed

Goals for 2023:

Of course there is some rollover from last year but they can be repeated year over year, especially the travel ones.  This of course does not include any work, family, or relationship goals... this is just strictly goals as they relate to this blog.

  1.  Improve my time at Hardrock over last year.
  2. Read at least 24 books
  3. Run Coaching Certification
  4. Travel somewhere new for a race
  5. Sky Dive
  6. Keep the blog more updated
  7. No more than 1 drink a month
  8. Average a Peak a week in 2023
  9. Backpacking on the Colorado Trail for 3-7 days
  10. Work on my lack of mobility at least 3-4 times a week.

2023 in Pictures  (Chose 1 photo per month which was super challenging! Did include 3 for Jun and July though.  You can go through the weekly posts to see a lot of photos from the year)

Have a Happy and Safe 2023!!!!!

Dec 26th - Jan 1st

“In life, as in chess, forethought wins.” - Charles Buxton

Rough week mental wise for me.... but I am still here.

Monday:

9 am:  5.3 miles averaging 8 min pace.  My Costco loop in Superior.... I do love this loop for whatever reason.  Just a chill jog.  Most of this week will be chill jogging as I come back from the flu last week.

--spent the rest of the day messing around town with Paula.  Scored on some new gear from Berkeley Park Running.  Almost bought this hat for crewing others at 100s but didn't.  I might go back for it.

Tuesday:
7 am:   60 mins at the gym
Warmup:  Airbike, mobility and drills

Alt EMOM 30 mins:  Completed | Rx'd
Every 1 min for 30 mins, alternating between:
3 Squat Cleans, 70% 1RM | 135 lbs
15 Assault Bike Calories

-- that got spicy quickly...

2 pm:  5.4 miles averaging 8:15pace.  Costco loop again a little slower due to the crazy winds coming out of the west.  Felt like someone was pelting me with rocks as I ran into the wind on a dirt road the first half of the run.  Almost turned around but glad I did not.

Wednesday:

NOTE:  Weight check-  No check this week.  Still been acting like an asshole with my eating and drinking.  Getting back on track next week after New Years.

5:30 am:  1 hour at Crossfit

Warmup: Airbike, mobility and drills

5 RF-ME: Shoulder Press and Pull-ups : 120 reps | Rx'd
5 rounds of:
max rep Shoulder Press, 65% 1RM | 95 lbs | 16, 15, 12, 10, and 10
max rep Strict Pull-ups | 15, 12, 10, 10, and 10

8:30 am:  7 runs at Eldora right after Crossfit with Rebecca and her friend (her name is slipping my mind right now). Good on the front side, icy on the backside.  Most black runs were closed still but got in 1 black, rest all blues.  Fun morning!

4 pm:  5 miles averaging 8 min miles.  Walked outside to jog some and it was 38 degrees and raining hard.  Fuck that.  Hit the treadmill instead at Vasa.

Thursday:

They forecasted we would get 1-3 inches of snow as the temp dropped and the rain turned to snow... woke up to almost 12 inches.... They were a little bit off.  Every time it snows I wake up early, no idea why.  Was up by 3am and had the driveway shoveled by 4am.

8 am: 3 miles in an hour on cross country skis.  Got out the skinny skis and did 1 mile laps from the house around the hood.  Every lap I had to lay a new track due to cars thinking it is funny to go over my tracks on the side of the road.  Fuck them... lol.  Very slow for I have not been on the skinny skis in a few years.

10:30 am:  1:15 at Crossfit.

Warmup: Airbike, mobility and drills

5 RFT: Double Unders, Push-ups, and Overhead Squats : 14 mins 16 secs | Not Rx'd
5 rounds of:
75 Double Unders
20 Push-ups
10 Overhead Squats, 60% 1RM | 75 lbs

-then-

15 mins of PT work on the back and glutes... been slacking on that to much and starting to feel it again.

--  Heading up to Fairplay this afternoon to Don's house.  Going to do Sheep Mountain tomorrow.

Friday:

9 am:  5.7 miles w/ 2400ft of vert in 3:30.  Lap of Sheep Mountain in Fairplay with Don and Nate.   Trail breaking most of the way up to our knees.... long morning but fun as hell.

Saturday:

9 am:   1:10 at the gym

Warmup:  Rowing, mobility and drills

20 RFT: Partner Wods, Wall Balls, Kettlebell Swings, and 2 more : 22 mins 19 secs | Rx'd
20 rounds of:
Partner Wod
10 Wall Balls, 20 lbs
10 Kettlebell Swings, 53 lbs
10 Down To 1
Burpee Box Jump Over, 24 in

-- partner with Marisa, could feel the back today so really concerned yet again.... sigh.... thinking it is from yesterdays post holing we did.

10:30 am:  5 miles averaging 8 min miles.  Easy run around the Tech Center right after Crossfit.... a slog for sure today.

Sunday:

10 am:   6.1 miles averaging 7:26 pace.  2 mile warmup- 5K in 20:19 (6:33pace) on icy bike path- then a 1 mile cooldown on the roads again.  Did much better than expected considering how icy it was and how out of shape I feel. Need to get back under 20 again soon though, could have prob done that today without the conditions.  Got 6th overall and 1st age group.

Total Weekly Numbers

Better than the last few weeks so that is a win.... feel like I am all over the place when I see all the activities in the chart below.

Thursday:

Not feeling well today and fuck the temp outside.  Took the day off and just focused on getting ahead on work so next week is easier.

Friday:

Was up most of the night last night puking my brains out from 11-1 then could not sleep well due to body aches.  No fever and tested neg for Covid so think I just had a 24 hour bug.  Did not do shit today and never left the house but finally ate about 3pm and felt better.  Hopefully this is the end of it.

Total Weekly Numbers

Shitty week with a touch of the flu in the middle of it.... seems every time I get back into a groove shit hits the fan... all I can do is to keep plugging.   Not really working this coming week.  The plant is closed but I am on call for purchasing in case something pops up while everyone else is off.  I would rather save my vacation time for the summer.
