August Check In

Theme of the month: Back on track (somewhat)

So it seems that I was able to turn things around this past month and get back to being somewhat my normal self in all aspects of life.  Not sure how I was able to turn it around this month but plan on just rolling with it and keep it going as long as I can.  Was able to do 3 races this month... yes 3 in a month after pretty much not starting all the races I signed up for this Spring and early Summer.  Honestly it was really hard for me mentally to start the first one, to be back on that start line and not be filled with dread....  Of course after about the first 2-3 miles all was good and I went to work having a great day doing a 38 mile loop in the San Juan mountains during the Silverton 60K....  Learning to let go of the anxiety that I seemed to have built up the past year or so.  Anyways, races this month; Silverton 60K, Pikes Peak Marathon, and Staunton Rocks Marathon.  Got in a chunk of my training for Run Rabbit Run 100 with long races this month... I will take it.  It was easier for me to do my long runs as races verses just going out and putting in the miles solo.  I seem to give the runs a more honest effort.

Training Update

Back to a normal training month with over 70 hours of activity this month with 3 longer races as I stated above.  Even broke out the bike on the last half of the month which I have not ridden hardly at all the past year.  Hopefully I have enough under my belt to give Run Rabbit Run 100 on Sept 17th an honest effort and not just slog the whole way to the finish line.  Yes I will slog to the finish if I have too for I really need my Hardrock qualifier but that is not my goals.  My main goal is never just to finish, that is not "shooting your shot" as my coach says....  Goals in order from A goal to C goals: A-sub 24, B-sub 30, C- finish the fucking thing.... today on Sunday 9/5 as I write this will be the last longer run (13ish miles) before the taper starts tomorrow.

Caught up with Jerusha, Bob, Donnie, JT, Katie, Dan, Rebecca,  and three races this month where I was able to see lots of friends so it was awesome month.

Here are the total hours broken down by activity for the month.

July Check In

Theme of the month: Getting out of my head and dealing with burn out....

Burnout isn’t exactly the same as overtraining that everyone things they have (very few people do enough to overtrain physically but that is a topic for another day), but there’s plenty of overlap between the two though: chronic exhaustion, a drop in performance, and in many cases a decision to eventually walk away from the sport.  I am almost to the point of walking away from racing in 2021 many times but the only thing that is not allowing me to do so is knowing how depressed I would be if I did, it is a huge part of who I have become the past 15 years.

Let’s start with some definitions from some research I have been doing this month. Athlete burnout is a psychological syndrome with three different parts: emotional and physical exhaustion; a reduced sense of accomplishment; and more negative feelings about your sport. There’s lots of debate about what causes it, but a common view is that it results from the chronic stress of feeling that the load placed on you—hard training, competitive expectations, other aspects of life—is more than you can handle.  Basically like I tell all my friends that I help coach, your body does not know the difference between training stress and life stress, stress is stress for your body!

This is why personality traits matter: to some extent, you’re the one who decides what demands to put on yourself. Even the demands that others place on you will be filtered through your perceptions of what they expect. And your level of self-belief will influence how well you think you can handle those demands.

Perfectionism three key elements. One is how you see yourself: “I put pressure on myself to perform perfectly.” The second is how you think others see you: “People always expect me to perform perfectly.” And the third is how you see others: “I am never satisfied with the performance of others.” The first two are presumably most relevant to the risk of burnout for athletes; the third, you’d expect, is most relevant in coaches.  I really struggle with all 3 of these with the second one weighing the most on my mind.

Setting high goals and holding yourself to high standards can have lots of positive effects; it’s beating yourself up when you fall short of those standards that is most associated with negative outcomes like depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

So this is my predicament, how the hell do I get out of this?  Hopefully I can somehow let this all go and just go have some fun damn it.......  Anyways, enough of my rambling.......

Training Update

Better month than last month but still not the normal "Shad" month that I am used too.  Still thinking of taking an extend period off which of course I talked about in last month's post and dug a little bit more into above.  Had no races scheduled for July so nothing to bail on like I have been all spring and I was able to come out to Hardrock and do a bunch of the course making sure the markers and trash were all picked up with Donnie.  I really needed that weekend.  Hopefully Aug goes much better...

Caught up with Jerusha, Bob, Chris, Kari, Donnie, Porf, lots of friends at Hardrock 100, and a Denver Trailrunners Sunday run this month in person so it was awesome month on that front at least.  It felt like we are back to normal, as long as the delta variant does not shut us down again.

Here are the total hours broken down by activity for the month.

June Check In

Theme of the month: Getting back on track.

A great month with a focus of getting myself back on track on all fronts.  Seemed to have derailed myself over the past few months and I am over it.  Spent 4 days up in Sheridan helping Donnie do Bighorn 100, which he rocked, and I think that reset the motivation that I have seem to be lacking lately.  Being out there moving all night long was just what I needed.  Of course I could have gone without tripping and doing a superman forehead first into a tree and knocking myself out but that is all part of it.

Since I am in catch-up mode again with the monthly blog lets get right to it.

Training Update

Somewhat of a decent month getting back on track. Would have liked to see the total hours over 72 but I will take it.  I did take a large chunk of time off after pacing Donnie for 34 plus miles at Bighorn.  This was the longest run of the year so far.  And still super active at the gym as well but see that dropping the next couple of months as I ramp up mileage and effort a little to get ready for Run Rabbit Run.

Caught up with Bob, Clyde, Kelly, Donnie, Porf, Dan, Ray, Jhon, Marie, Adam, Chris Poland, Don R.,   and a Denver Trailrunners Sunday run this month in person so it was awesome month on that front at least.  Starting to really feel like things are getting back to normal with going to races and not having to wear a mask.

Here are the total hours broken down by activity for the month.
